Adhesives for Scrapbooks
One of the really great things about scrapbooks gaining in popularity is that the products that you can use to build your book have really improved. One of the biggest improvements can be found in adhesives. Where you used to pretty much have a choice of white glue or rubber cement‚ there are now a myriad of choices when it comes to sticking things in your scrapbook.
When it comes to adhesives‚ if you only check one thing‚ it should be that it is acid–free. Scrapbooks are keepsake items meant to survive for generations‚ and acid–free products will let them remain viable for years to come. Acid may be found in any part of the book including glue‚ paper and embellishments. So if you can use predominantly acid–free products when you are designing your scrapbook pages‚ you will ensure that your scrapbook lasts for ages.
Adhesives Have Come a Long Way
The ever famous glue stick is easy to use and it’s convenient. If you are using one for scrapbooking‚ get a good quality one so the glue will not turn brittle and crack years from now.
To add dimension to a page you can add foam squares to your photos or small embellishments. They are just a little thicker than paper‚ and they add a 3D quality to your page. They are packaged in large sheets‚ so you simply peel off a piece when you need one. Their adhesive is really sturdy‚ so they can hold large items in place as well.
Another great adhesive choice is glue dots. Every scrapbooker will have glue dots for a transparent hold. They work a lot like double sided tape in that they are sticky on both sides. They are great for bonding vellum or transparencies to a page‚ because they are themselves transparent.
Tape that is double–sided is one of the more popular adhesives‚ and it comes in all shapes and strengths. Some double–sided tapes will hold an item on the page‚ but will allow you to remove the item and stick it elsewhere. This way‚ you can rearrange or move anything around on the page when it suits you.
Tape that is double–sided is great for mounting photos. Then if you need to snitch it from your book to make a copy‚ you can replace it when you are done‚ and no one is the wiser. Photo corners are also a great option for mounting photos in your album‚ and you can peel up the photo and replace it without damaging the photo.
Have several adhesives on hand when you go to build you scrapbooks‚ and it will make your scrapbooking experience more fun. For larger jobs‚ you can find spray adhesives‚ so if you want to lay a piece of vellum over a colored page‚ a spray adhesive will do the trick. Again‚ make sure that it is acid free.
You may want to also have an adhesive remover on hand. The come in many convenient forms‚ and they will allow you to peel up your work if you need to rearrange. You never know when you will need to add yet another grandchild to the page‚ so leave the option open to rearrange when you need to.
