Scrapbooking – Bring Your Memories to Life

From as far back as the days of cave painting‚ humans have shown a need to chronicle their lives. While it was hard to pack around a cave wall to share with your family during the holidays‚ it was not until the 18th century that diaries really became popular.

Of course‚ this timing neatly dovetails with paper becoming more available and affordable. Before this time‚ you would have to be someone special to have the time or the means to chronicle your world.

The Art of Scrapbooking – More Than Keeping a Diary

While a diary is a fantastic way to keep track of where you have been in your life‚ it is not nearly as wonderful as a scrapbook. A scrapbook adds a whole new dimension to the idea of diary. By adding pictures and photos‚ and a pressed flower from a first dance or a lock of baby’s hair‚ the scrapbook is at once descriptive and tactile. With rich textures and colors‚ the book is wonderful to read and entertaining to behold.

Everyone has special moments in his or her life. While people frequently end up stuffing ribbons and trophies into desk drawers or closets‚ scrapbooking is a wonderful way to organize and honor these memories. If an entire trophy will not fit into an album‚ perhaps the plate from the trophy will‚ or at the very least a photo makes a perfect statement.

This is frequently where people run into problems with their scrapbooking. As with anything‚ you have to edit your content to keep it interesting. By adding too much minutia into an album you run the risk of boring your audience‚ and what should have been an exciting trip down memory lane turns into a giant yawn. Editing is particularly important with digital memories‚ because you can fit so much information into such a small space.

So‚ first pick your theme‚ and then edit accordingly. Perhaps you want to build a scrapbook of “Firsts” where you may include your first tooth‚ your first haircut‚ your first kiss‚ and the first love letter that you ever received. Or you may want to pick a theme of “Great Vacations” where you record all of the fun that your entire family had on each great vacation that you took together.

There is no size limitation to your scrapbook. It can be big or small‚ and it can be made out of anything that you wish including paper or digital. Pages can be paper‚ plastic or even cloth‚ and it can cover a single event or a lifetime of memories.

There is a wonderful thing that you as a scrapbooker get to enjoy that your audience does not‚ and that is you have the memory of creating the scrapbook. It is basically a memory of a memory. By sifting through all of the available information‚ pictures and documents‚ you select key portions to include in your book. However‚ as you edit‚ you also get to enjoy all of the memories one more time.

Scrapbooking lets you arrange your memories to share with others. By editing them and thoughtfully displaying them on the page‚ it allows them to remain alive forever. Scrapbooking is not only a great way to share your memories with your peers‚ but it is a wonderful way for you to pass your heritage on from one generation to the next.
